I've just had the same problem with Illustrator swf files in Flash 10/as3. I am just adding the whole loader to the display. Seems to work fine.

I can confirm Illustrator CS4 "export to swf" produces AVM1 swfs. I've been having huge problems with this for a while now. I recently contacted Adobe to hear about CS5.

Guess What???
They confirmed that illustrator CS5 also export to AVM1.

Unbelievable... I consider this a huge bug. Why would you want to create flash symbols in illustrator if you can't use them in actionscript 3.
